Sony WH-1000XM4 Review

Design

It is similar to its predecessor, although there are quite a few improvements. They’ve added some futuristic upgrades this time into the new Sony WH-1000XM4. But that doesn’t fall under the design part.

It is convenient, portable, lightweight & stylish. The earcups are slightly thicker, resulting in better isolation even when the noise cancellation is turned off. On the other side, the headband is lightly thinner as compared to its predecessor. Indeed they are very comfortable. But for more prolonged use, you might feel a pressure on your head.

Sound

Sony WH-1000XM4 has surprised us with its sound enhancements. It is more potent than we assumed. You can mark the difference between the sounds of the Sony WH-1000XM4 & its predecessor. Although the XM3 has got a good sound, this one leaves it behind.

Every sound we tested falls in place, whether it is High-bass or any other high-frequency sounds. The bass is perfect & the low notes are just outstanding. It sounds excellent, and you can hear the variations in the music.

Connectivity & Features

Thanks to Bluetooth Multipoint, which makes it more convenient in everyday use by letting you connect to two devices at a time. It is supported by Blutooth5.0 for a better multipoint transition. The transitions are smart enough to detect the device you’re on that too without changing Bluetooth settings. For multipoint usage, AAC Bluetooth codec needs to be used by the connected devices. By far the most amazing feature we find while making Sony WH-1000XM4 review.

Aside from this, you can avail of a few more features with the help from the Sony Headphones Connect app. The “Speak to chat” facility works like a charm. It pauses the music whenever it detects that you’re speaking.

The new integrated sensor on the left earcup detects when you have it on your ear or not. When you take the headphones off, it pauses the music which is a must-have feature you could expect from such a premium headphone.

The headphone controls are nearly the same with some slight changes. Earcups are touch-sensitive, response to touch, swipe & tap. Skipping between songs and Swip to control volume works seamlessly.

Cupping the left earcup activates ambient mode which lowers the music sound to let you know what’s happening outside you.

Noise cancellation on Sony WH-1000XM4 is quite an improvement for sound lovers. Sony has made the “Active Noise Cancellation” even better than before. More noise removed to give you a better sound experience as compared to its predecessor.

Pairing

It uses NFC or Bluetooth mechanism to connect with your devices. If you’re onto a BlueTooth device, the pairing is very straight forward. For the first time pairing turn on the headphone, it will automatically go on pairing mode. Click on the Sony WH-1000XM4 device and enjoy the music.

For multipoint pairing follow the below steps:-

  1. Power off your headphones.
  2. Hold down the power button to power on the headphones, but this time don’t let it go until you hear the pairing chime (or you see the small LED light start rapidly flashing blue.)
  3. Navigate to Bluetooth settings on your second device.
  4. Click on the WH-1000XM4 to connect.

Sony Headphones Connect app

For better convenience, you should use the Sony Headphones Connect App. It enables quite a new feature & enhances your usability. You can activate the assistant feature or noise cancellation only from this app for the second button on your headphone. Unfortunately, you can’t use both the components at once. Ouch, that hurts!

The assistive feature is compatible with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. You can prefer anyone between these and use it seamlessly.

Battery

Sony claims it could give you 30hours of playback time. But honestly, it could last only up to 19-20hours if played on high volume with noise cancellation turned on. The battery life of the Sony WH-1000XM4 is still high for a regular user but lacks behind its predecessor.

The good thing is it supports USB-C type fast charging which can give you 5 hours of playback time only by charging for 10minutes. It is a saviour for the last moment’s action. For making this Sony WH-1000XM4 review we tested it and Sony nailed it here.

Should you get the Sony WH-1000XM4?

If you want the best pair of Bluetooth headphones with noise cancellation feature, then you should go for it. Although there is the previous WH-1000XM3, now Sony made them even better. Bluetooth multipoint is a vast improvement that makes it more convenient & useful for a regular user.

However, if you’ve WH-1000XM3 already then, we might not suggest you go for it. With such great features, noise cancellation, sound quality & other subtle improvements it is a must-buy for those who are new to this game.

Conclusion

While making this Sony WH-1000XM4 review blog, we have gone through several tests. And now we are confident about the quality of this headphone. It surprised us much while doing this review. It is not just a regular headphone & has the potential to beat anyone in this game. So, if you’re planning to buy it, you can go for it without wasting your time much.
